Stiff neck

One in four people in Germany go to the doctor with back problems once a year. One fifth of days taken as sick leave in Germany are due to back problems. 15 per cent of men and 22 per cent of women have chronic back pain. Stiff neck and shoulder problems are classed as an epidemic, although strictly speaking they are a symptom and not a disease.

Stiff neck - what should I do?

Sit dynamically: Try to change your sitting position as often as possible. Sitting balls and ergonomic swivel chairs are best.

At the office: Stand up often and try to walk over to a colleague rather than telephone them.

80 per cent of chronic back pain is caused by lack of exercise. Walk, swim, cycle or hike regularly.

Avoid unbalanced exercise. Repetitive strain leads to wear and tear.

If you are actively engaged in sport: Warm up beforehand and stretch your muscles.

Avoid stress. This causes muscle strain.

Train your core muscles. Trained muscles can withstand strain better than untrained ones.
