Bathing in the summer

Summer, sun, sunshine If it’s hot outside your body is desperate to cool down. An ice cream or a cold drink may refresh you for a short time in summer, but they hardly refresh the soul. So what can you do? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a cold bath but a lukewarm bath that brings relief.

Hot or cold baths in summer?

A bath refreshes your whole body. But it’s important to keep the temperature really lukewarm and not too cold. If the temperature is below 20 degrees the body has to use up lots of energy to restore body temperature back to its normal level. This constricts the blood vessels, preventing the body from cooling down. This can lead to heat accumulating, which is counter-productive if you’re trying to cool off.

A smart alternative: An arm affusion

If you’re in a hurry, a good alternative to a full bath is the “Kneipp Espresso” or arm affusion. They’re easier to manage, require just a few steps to prepare but still cool you down sufficiently. Then you can go back to relaxing in the sun.
